How To Clean A Sleeping Bag

The Best Method To Clean A Sleeping Bag

Sleeping bags collect lots of dust and dirt after their use in camps and outdoor activities.  They also collect body oils and sweat from the person using them.  Follow the best method to clean the sleeping bags when times come to clean them.

Here is how to clean a sleeping bag:

  • Open the sleeping bags completely and shake out the dirt.
  • Check the makers' care product labels to see if the bags are machine washable.
  • Sleeping bags have to be cleaned in a front-loader washing machine

as the agitation in a conventional top-loader can harm the insulation.
  • Wash one sleeping bag at a time and be sure to throw in a couple of other light pieces to ensure that the load stays balanced.
  • Use the gentle cycle and cool water.
  • For down bags, use a specialized washing liquid, like Nikwax Down Wash

and for synthetics, a mild washing liquid, like Woolite

  • Run an extra rinse and spin-only cycle to make sure all the soap and unwanted water is removed.

How To Dry A Sleeping Bag?

When it comes to drying sleeping bags, your most effective choice is air-drying. While it will absolutely take more time, it's proved to protect the exterior shell and insulation from over heating. If you must tumble-dry the sleeping bags, use a quite low heat setting and ensure that the bags have space to tumble easily. If your dryer's not big enough, you'll need to take them to the laundromat and use a professional machine.
